A New Office for Our Business - Part I

In my previous post (End of an Era), I mentioned the cycle of endings and new beginnings. Well, a new beginning is on the way for our business. Gretchen and I were doing a little clean-up of the office space we will be moving into at the end of the week. While there, we took a few photos.

For those familiar with the Beaverton area, we are moving into the old Suburban Photo building that is located across the street from the Post Office.

This photo (above), along with the previous pic, were taken from the Post Office side of 1st Street.

The above picture was taken from the other side of the building.

Once you walk in the main door, you enter what will be our showroom. At the opposite end, you go up the stairs to the office area.

This picture is a view of the showroom from the office area.

I'll post some more photos, later this week.

The End of an Era

Sometimes, there are climatic endings to life's chapters. Other times, it seems that they simply fade away. And, oddly enough, there are those occasions when the "real end" has not yet been reached, but it sure feels like it has. Today was one of those days for me.

How many times have you stopped at a garage sale? Or, even just noticed a"Garage Sale" sign as you drive through your neighborhood? Or, if you're like me, continue to be amazed at how much money is spent buying each other's junk?

This garage sale was so much like all the rest, yet it touched me with its uniqueness.

First, this sale was held on Donegal Court in West Linn. That alone makes it somewhat unique in that Donegal Ct. is a very short street. Not that many sales can take place, there.

It was easy to see that this garage sale was being held to prepare for a move, as the owner had sold the house.

The owner told me that he and his wife bought the house in 1977. Wow, that's three decades. Know how many places I have lived since 1977. Me neither -- I lost track a long time ago.

The view from Donegal Court looked like your typical, suburban garage sale.

From the garage, looking out, looked like the typical stuff for sale. Although it was hard to concentrate with the good-looking lady that was keeping an eye on that suspected garage-sale shoplifter!

Once I was able to take my eyes off that slim-looking lady, I started to take a closer look at some of the items for sale...

Do they actually sell TV Trays, anymore? I don't think that I have eaten using one for awhile, but this one seemed familiar. Does anybody recognize it?

The owner told me that his deceased wife made this cookie jar. I wonder how many times a child, grandchild, or other lucky visitor got caught sneaking a chocoloate-chip cookie right out from underneath Sleepy? Bet that happened quite a bit as it looked well used.

Here is something quite sentimental -- a juicer that was bought from an infomercial. For some reason, the owner did not look like a juicer kind of guy, to me. :-)

If you've seen one Nativity scene, you've seen thema all, haven't you? Yet, something about this one was so familiar.

There were items for sale that were inside the house, so I made my way inside...

The refrigerator was not for sale, because it was the holder of what appeared to be some very important documents and photos.

I wasn't sure if Debbie was an only child or if she was simply the spoiled, youngest child of the owner! Since I didn't see any other nameplates, it was difficult to tell.

This fire made me feel very warm, not only becuase of the heat it generated, but the many memories that it caused to race through my mind.

Something about this sofa with its not-for-sale sign made me feel sad....

...but not as sad as the empty dining room. It looked like it needed a table, chairs, and family sitting around it -- enjoying dinner together, topped off with chocolate pudding for desert.

I decided it was time to go out to the backyard...

I heard there was a picnic table for sale. Who would want this thing? Looks like it was used too much by a family that liked to barbeque hamburgers. What in the world is that hanging up on the lattice????

Of course, it's that ol' frog thermometer. Something tells me that lady of the house liked to keep track of the temperature. Not sure if it sold, today.

I have seen these type of lawn statues in hundreds of yards. There is absolutely nothing unique about them, except, perhaps, their age. Yet, seeing them, today, brought tears to my eyes. I usually don't get choked up at garage sales.

There is a good reason why those tears began to flow. I always say, "A house is just a house, people make it a home." However, seeing the items in these pictures, along with the piano coasters, "pudding cups," and other familiar stuff, I could not help but think of the people that inhabited that house -- my Mom and Dad.

Today felt like saying goodbye to thirty years (or more) of memories. I did not like it, but I did not want it to end, either. You know how when you think of the past, you remember so many of the good times and forget the bad? Today, I forgot that Mom had Alzheimer's. That felt good. Very good.

Then, knowing that I needed to leave, I stood out on the deck of 2444 Donegal. I turned from the deer statues and looked toward what used to be a view of Pete's Mountain. Instead, I saw this...

...This awesome portrait of spring in Oregon reminded me that just as surely as winter ends and spring begins, there is always another chapter in life after one comes to an end. I hang onto that thought, because I am so sad that this memorable chapter is nearing completion.

"Street Baller"

Thursday night was basketball awards night at Victoria's school. It's kind of sad that the season is over.
As we entered the school, Victoria had a "Lebron moment."

Of course, we stopped at the locker.

Coach Walker gives Victoria her trophy. After saying so many of the girls were afraid to shoot, he said that Victoria had no problem taking a shot (she never met one she didn't like!). He also referred to her as a "Street Baller" that learned how to run the plays.

Here she is enjoying some of the candy that was served.

Proud Pappa

Can I say how proud I am of my son? Even though Jenn has not figured out how to rotate pictures, these are wonderful photos. Congratulations, Tucker, Jenn, and Monte!

I Hate Homework!

Did you notice how everytime Gretchen takes a picture of me, it is always when I am not smiling? I really am not as grumpy as I look in all these pictures (promise)!

Anyway, while Dimitri was entertaining Max and Miles (see post, below), Victoria was working on homework. Here I am trying to help her find metaphors and similes in Red Badge of Courage. We both agree that we don't like homework. :-)

Max and Miles Visit the Mortensens

Max and Miles spent Thursday evening at our place. As you can see, Dimitri did a great job keeping them entertained. Max is the bigger/older of Gordon & Tracy's boys.

Dimitri, Miles, and Max (from left to right) focus their attention on the television.

The Gloved Reader

Weird, Weird, Weird...

Those close to the Mortensen family know that I have often read to my children at night. A few know that I hate to touch certain types of surfaces — cardboard, for example. Well, we have this old Curious George book, and I simply cannot stand the feel of the cover. It's worse than cardboard! So, when Victoria wanted to read it, I simply had to do something to protect my hands from that awful cover! :-) Gretchen walked in, thought I was rather weird (most know that, already), and simply had to take a couple photos.

This is what happens when you reach 50. You have no shame. Not only was I strange enough to put on the gloves, I am posting the photo of it for all to see.

Just in case you wanted another angle of the "Gloved Reader!"

Be sure to check out my new links

Yesterday I added my darling daughter-in-law, Jennifer Mortensen's blog link as well as my wonderful Aunt Janet and Uncle Ron Enge's link to my blog. Check out all my links down the left side of this blog we all have some pretty fun times and beautiful children.

Mulitple New Posts Today!

Keep scrolling down and reading: three new lengthy posts for the day. We were just taking some more photos so if they are any good Doug might even post a couple of new pics this evening.

I guess Doug does the photos and funny captions and I do the serious stuff. At least I am blogging.

Gretchen

Speaking of being a proud mother! Hillary's wisdom and heart!

Hillary's love for our Lord not only comes across because of the work she does but in her everyday life she is a truly Godly woman

The post below is an excerpt from Hillary's blog. The photos didn't come across and I know many of you don't have access to her blog spot blog but you might want to email Hillary and ask to be invited to to view her blog. This is for security reasons. Before it wasn't a private blog and some of her students found it by Googling her name. the photos really do add to the posting so email HIllary so you can see the whole thing plus all past blogs. Hillary is an amazing writer. Her link to her Xanga blog is listed in the left margin that one is not a private blog just more "fun" stuff. Let me know if you can't find Hillary's email address.

Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan
This morning, as I was reading Deuteronomy 28, I was struck by the description of the consequences for disobedience to God’s commands. Confusion, rebuke, pestilence, fever, pursuant enemies, defeat, boils, blindness, bewilderment, slaughter, captivity, distress, oppression, and plagues are just a few of the words within the curses for disobedience described for the people of Israel as a warning reminding them to serve the Lord their God with joy and a glad heart. I was admittedly disgusted by the description and somewhat confused by the words that are out of character for the “warm and fuzzy” God I sometimes make Him out to be in my human mind. (I think I must have been reading that passage when my teammate took the photo of me below without my knowledge.) In the end, however, I understood that the passage reminded me how serious God is about people loving and serving Him above all else.

A visit to Batterek, Astana’s Space Needle equivalent, saddened my heart. At the top of the tower stands a table dedicated to the unified religions of Kazakhstan. Now, I do feel strongly that people should make an effort to live in peace despite differences, but I also cringe at the promotion of pluralism, the promulgation of the idea that everyone is right and all roads lead to the same place when, in fact, they cannot.

Next to this table is a stand displaying a hand mold of President Nazurbaev. One is suppose to place his or her own hand in the mold and make a wish. In light of what I read earlier in the day about God’s obvious desire for people to obey His commandments and love Him with all their heart and with all their soul, I “wished” that Kazakhstan might be a nation where hearts are turned toward Him, where people can receive blessing such as He described to the Israelites of restoration, compassion, circumcised hearts, and prosperity as they love and obey the Lord our God.

“…So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him…” Deuteronomy 30:19b-20a

Our daughter is an amazing mother, we are so proud!

Below is an excerpt from Adrienne's blog. Last night as I was reading it (and crying) I too was reflecting on what it means to be a mother and I was thinking back over the life of my curly haired angel (but her curls were golden). It is truly a wonder and a blessing to watch Adrienne mother new angels. First I was blessed by God to have Adrienne but the blessings are immeasurable to not only have my precious grandchildren but to watch my own daughter with them.

A daughter is the happy memories of the past, the joyful moments of the present, and the hope and promise of the future. ~Author Unknown

"As I was creating the post of Annabelle's first birthday, I was reflecting back at this last year. I can easily say that it has been the hardest, most exhausting, most stressful year of my life-my first year as a mother of two! However, the joy she has brought to me and our little family is immeasurable. She is a gift from God! I know that most of you have seen most all of these pictures, as they are some of my favorites, but I needed to remember these moments today, so I spent hours perusing through her thousands of adorable baby pictures (it was quite a task to narrow down this blog and get all the pictures in chronological order). This is the product of my walk down memory lane today. Just a little bonus for all my faithful bloggers. I can hardly believe it has already been a year. Where has my baby gone?"

To view the awesome photos of Annabelle and Isaac that go along with the above post from Adrienne log onto www.teradafamily.blogspot.com

I remember when I was pregnant with Tucker I was truly afraid because I didn't think it was humanly possible to love another human being as much as I loved Adrienne. Of course the instant he was born I realized all my fears were unfounded and God gives mothers an enormous capacity to love. When I was pregnant with Hillary I wasn't worried about loving her as much as Adrienne and Tucker because I now knew a mother's love knows no bounds, no limits.

When we were going through the adoption process to adopt Marina and same fears returned. However I prayed "okay God I know I can't possibly love her as much as the first three but I pray I can love her enough to give her a good life and be a good mother." I knew I could do that. God had other plans for my love "love enough" wasn't good enough for God or this mother. In a dingy hotel room in Kazan, Russia God again taught me the limitless love of a mother. A very small frail frightened (I would guess she was afraid, somewhat at least) dark haired dark eyed little girl walked in the door. In a very strong accent she looked at me and said "Ma" In an instant the bonding was complete and I had my new 11 year old daughter in my arms, I knew right then I would again expand my mothers complete unconditional love the same love as the first three to this stranger in my arms. Marina would often tell people the story of how this strange woman she had never met just kept hugging her and wouldn't let go and she couldn't breathe.

Of course Victoria and Dimitri skated into my heart in much the same way but again my fears were gone I knew I could love the same.

My love for Ken was also swift, how could I not love someone that so obviously loved my precious daughter so much!

Then Isaac comes along I loved him so much I thought I would explode! Being a grandmother is unbelievable, unimaginable.

Then our darling daughter-in-law Jennifer what a blessing not only to Tucker but to us as well. again seeing someone love my son so much is a blessing in its self.

Then Annabelle comes along! I have truly wonderful children and grandchildren. Thank you God!

I again find myself crying but its okay it's just because I love so much.

I love you Doug, Adrienne, Tucker, Hillary, Marina, Victoria, Ken, Dimitri, Isaac, Jenn and Annabelle thanks for allowing me to love you so much!

We are so proud of our son!

Below is the announcement of a dinner at which Tucker is the guest dessert chef tomorrow, so along with his beautiful wife Jennifer and their business partner Monte they will be serving plated desserts to 300 people. I'm not sure which of Tucker's fabulous pastries they will be serving but the crowd is in for a treat! Maybe next year he can be the chef for the entree. If I had known sooner we would be among the guests. Tucker you need to give us a little more notice next time!

Just A Quiet Evening at Home

Doug is always after Adrienne to post new photos from Kansas City. Adrienne says, "But there is nothing new to post."

Doug wanted to point out that even a quiet evening at home as its memorable moments, such as...

Looking at one of Grandpa's favorite websites (after his daugher's blogs, of course) — The Watch Prince!

And, Baba seems to be admiring watch bands, too...wait a minute! Maybe it is not watch bands that have her attention...

Should have known, she's admiring her grandkids, again! :-)

Like Adrienne stated on her blog, we don't know what this is (below), but it sure is cute!

I am not sure, but it looks like somebody is moving and decided to recycle their daughter! :-)

So, you see, Adrienne, even a "slow night at home" has its interesting events. So, we are anxioiusly awaiting your next post!

Your comments are appreciated!

I've seen comments on the Terada Family blog that comments could not be made on this blog. I think the setting has been changed. Comments were waiting to br "moderated" so I "moderated" them.

We're still trying to catch up with technology! :-)

Pizza Time!

Isaac received a chef jacket from Tucker this week. On Friday night, there was a pizza party at the Mortensen house. So, Isaac wore his new chef jacket to help Baba make an allergy-free pizza, while Victoria and Dimitri observe.

Piano Lessons

Gretchen (aka Baba) began taking piano lessons, this year. Doug really enjoys listening to her play while he does the crossword puzzle. It's even more enjoyable to watch her practice with her little companion.

Ear Candling

While the Terada family was visiting, somebody got the wild idea that it would be a good thing to have an ear candling party.

Victoria is elated, while Matt (Matt Goeas, one of 500,000 Levasa cousins :-) seriously concentrates on winning the "most wax" competition.

Taylor Root tries to hide, but the paparazzi got a shot of him, anyway.

Victoria can't believe she has flames coming out of her ear!

Matt happier now that he displays his earwax deposit. Little did he know that he would fail to beat....

...Ken Terada, the undisputed winner of the contest for most wax -- a very prestigious and most coveted honor! Congratulations, Ken!
